ACLU National Director's Series: Lucas Guttentag speaks in St. Louis on Immigrants and The Constitution

Immigration has been core issue for the ACLU since its founding. Today, it is a hot-button political and civil rights issue not only in Congress but in cities and states throughout the country as large-scale workplace raids become more common, immigration detention grows geometrically, access to the courts is under attack and local anti-immigrant laws are proposed around the country. The ACLU is at the forefront of all these battles and is fighting to preserve civil liberties and constitutional rights against daunting odds. What are the core constitutional values at stake and how is the ACLU responding?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Lucas Guttentag is the founding national director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project, which he established in 1987. He has litigated major class action and constitutional cases on behalf of immigrants throughout the United States for twenty-five years, including in the Supreme Court where he won a landmark ruling that of immigrants are entitled to bring habeas corpus challenges to deportation. He was named a Human Rights Hero by the ABA’s Human Rights journal, designated one of the nation’s leading advocates of the last 25 years by the National Immigration Forum in Washington DC and received many other honors. He graduated with honors from U.C. Berkeley and Harvard Law School, has testified before Congress, regularly speaks on immigration law and civil liberties, and teaches courses on immigrants’ rights at leading law schools.
