Over-prescribing, inappropriate prescribing, and over-diagnosing have led to a reliance on medications to solve psychiatric problems -- with dangerous consequences. Nowhere is this more apparent than in children and minority populations and communities.

Yet, psychiatric medications can provide benefits to individuals with emotional disabilities and may be an important tool for recovery. However, medications are not as effective by themselves as when they are used with other tools (therapy, healthy lifestyle changes, social support etc).

Are pharmaceutical companies, in collaboration with organized psychiatry, exaggerating the importance of psychiatric medications? Are they downplaying the negative effects these drugs can have?
