Postcard Campaign--Local Control of the St. Louis Police Department
Did you know that St. Louis and Kansas City are the
only two cities in the USA which do not control their
police department? They are controlled by the State of
Missouri.
This antiquated system dates back to the
Civil War and involves issues long since resolved. We
need to make our police department more responsive to
citizens. We are now in a campaign to get signed
postcards of support, which we can take to Jefferson
City next year. Contact: Coalition Against Police
Crimes and Repression (CAPCR) 454-9005 or 314-413-0454.
CAPCR: Local Control Update
As we move toward the next legislative session in Jefferson City, the Coalition
Against Police Crimes and Repression is gearing up for phase two of our campaign for
Local Control of the St. Louis Police Dept. Maida Coleman has agreed to sponsor our
bill in the State Senate again this year. Jeanette Mott Oxford will be the House
sponsor.
As many of you know, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen voted 22-1 to support a
resolution calling for Local Control. The Aldermanic Black Caucus has offered
support in turning out folks for a Lobby Day in Jeff City which will probably be in
February.
We are in the process of getting signatures on postcards which we will use in Jeff
City to show support for the issue. If you can take some of these cards to meetings
of your organization, or if you or your organization want to officially endorse
Local Control, please let us know at capcr_cob@hotmail.com.
