Should a $10 billion Canadian oil and gas delivery company get the right to take a private nature preserve from a retired Illinois railroad conductor? Larry Jones, an administrative law judge with the Illinois Commerce Commission, is set to begin hearings in Springfield on July 8 to settle that question.
Carlisle Kelly’s nature preserve isn’t large, only 205 acres, but the battle for control of piece of his property is seen as a test of how much Americans are being asked to give up to supply the world’s energy needs.

On Friday, June 27th 10am-noon and Saturday June 28th 10am-3pm, Adam Turtle, head of the Earth Advocates Research Farm, will be presenting on how to survive during the food and fuel crisis. At this seminar, You will be introduced to the world of permaculture where you will learn how to grow your own food, create an edible landscape garden, compost, rainwater collection, raising and using bamboo, medicinal plants and herbs and building ponds. This free seminar will be held at 1411 Locust Street in Downtown St. Louis.

Consider the planned staff reductions: Last year there were 30 school
psychologists, according to the psychologists themselves; now the SAB is
going to cut that number to eight. With 30 psychologists, each one served an
average of three schools each. With eight psychologists, they will serve an
average of 11 schools each ­ less than half a day a week per school. Even
without knowing what they do, that would seem to be an unrealistic workload.
