The Enclosed Public: Protest and Premonitions at the Vice-Presidential Debate in St. Louis

Over one hundred workers, activists, students, veterans and families gathered in Northmoor park near campus to voice alternatives to the candidates' discussion of abstract policy issues. Activist groups Instead of War, Code Pink, and Veterans for Peace organized the protest to highlight the narrow scope of the debate, and to expose the carefully mediated lack of public access to discussions of public policy.

CAPCR Press Conference 7/22 @ City Hall -- Police Impound Scandal

Please attend a Press Conference being held by the Coalition Against Police Crimes and Repression. The Press Conference will be at City Hall (on the Tucker Side) at noon on Tuesday, July 22. We will be giving our response to the current Police Department scandal--in which officers and the Chief’s daughter benefited from the private use of impounded vehicles. Police Commissioners have tried to cover up the inappropriate nature of the relationship between the Department and the Towing company. We need your show of support!

Upcoming Jerome Johnson Civil Trial

Most of you will remember the Jerome Johnson case. At age sixteen, he was shot seven
times and survived. Police claimed that he shot at them, but newspaper
investigations and eyewitness accounts discredited much of the police testimony. In
2002 Jerome was found innocent of all charges in a trial which exposed police
accounts as totally impossible to accept.

Before and after the trial, Jerome was subjected to constant harassment. He was
arrested on a gun charge which lacked any substance. He was shot at under suspicious

Postcard Campaign--Local Control of the St. Louis Police Department

This antiquated system dates back to the
Civil War and involves issues long since resolved. We
need to make our police department more responsive to
citizens. We are now in a campaign to get signed
postcards of support, which we can take to Jefferson
City next year. Contact: Coalition Against Police
Crimes and Repression (CAPCR) 454-9005 or 314-413-0454.

CAPCR: Local Control Update

As many of you know, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen voted 22-1 to support a
resolution calling for Local Control. The Aldermanic Black Caucus has offered
support in turning out folks for a Lobby Day in Jeff City which will probably be in
February.

We are in the process of getting signatures on postcards which we will use in Jeff
City to show support for the issue. If you can take some of these cards to meetings
of your organization, or if you or your organization want to officially endorse
Local Control, please let us know at capcr_cob@hotmail.com.
