We expect opponents of public education to intensify their attacks in the
weeks running up to the hearing. As you know, the state department of
education moved to take over St. Louis Public Schools to stop your movement
for more educational opportunities for your children. They ousted your
elected representatives in order to say that ordinary citizens should have
no voice in deciding what education for their children should look like.

School cuts target the vulnerable - SAB meeting Thursday, 6 pm

Consider the planned staff reductions: Last year there were 30 school
psychologists, according to the psychologists themselves; now the SAB is
going to cut that number to eight. With 30 psychologists, each one served an
average of three schools each. With eight psychologists, they will serve an
average of 11 schools each less than half a day a week per school. Even
without knowing what they do, that would seem to be an unrealistic workload.

When you stop to consider what the psychologists do, however, you can
appreciate that this is an underhanded way to deny children special

Calling the Special Administrative Board of St. Louis Public Schools’ approval of massive cuts of programs and personnel “ridiculous,” Alderman Terry Kennedy told the American on Wednesday to expect action from black aldermen.

Kennedy, chair of the Aldermanic Black Caucus, said most members of that body “do not agree with the cuts and want to get further involved.”

Kennedy said, “We’re discussing what action we might take.”

Public Forum with STL Board of Education

will host a forum on public education at the Schlafly Library at 225 North

St. Louis Public Schools to hold public forums to unveil new action plan

St. Louis Board of Education Calls On Appointed Board to Change Policy

The resolution followed presentations and a discussion with rank-and-file
school bus drivers and representatives of Laborers Local 509 about the
reasons for the drivers' two-day strike, and a report by Board of Education
President Peter Downs on the state appointed board's looming conflicts with
other employee groups. Downs is chairman of the elected board's human
resources and professional development committee.
