In the summer of 2005, the Bush administration confronted a fresh wave of criticism over Guantánamo Bay. The detention center had just been branded “the gulag of our times” by Amnesty International, there were new allegations of abuse from United Nations human rights experts and calls were mounting for its closure.

The administration’s communications experts responded swiftly. Early one Friday morning, they put a group of retired military officers on one of the jets normally used by Vice President Dick Cheney and flew them to Cuba for a carefully orchestrated tour of Guantánamo.

Lots of Sound but no Fury

Tonight PBS offered part one of "Bush's War" in it's Frontlines series. Generally the program was ok in it's calm, matter-of-fact way, but it left a lot unsaid.

It showed the medacity of evil well enough but it didn't give enough background information. The program leaned on tactics in propaganda and statecraft, but did not discuss motivation.

How broadcast journalism is flawed in such a fundamental way that its utility as a tool for informing viewers is almost nil.

My column of last weekend alerted readers to the possibility of an interesting 3/11, the anniversary of the 2004 Madrid bombings. The events of 3/11 (Tuesday) strongly suggest that the alert was accurate. Buffaloed Bulls

A professional filmmaker team recently came back from India with a set of documentaries about non-violent movements in this country.

From the 70's to « Janadesh » the largest non-violent struggle since the independance, where 25,000 landless farmers walked 350km to New Delhi in October 2007 for the recognition or their rights.

These movies are currently being edited, but at the same time the team has opened a website to free the documentaries copyright. Experimenting the "funding and licensing" model to apply Creative Commons licences.

I am bringing back this article because it is the twilight of the Demockracy that it describes.
